Phu Quoc is a tiny taste of tropical heaven located just in the gulf of Thailand.

Once one of Southeast Asia’s last remaining hidden gems, domestic and international investment has now put Phu Quoc on the map, for better or for worse.

The island’s main town is still relatively calm and laid back, and many of the surrounding beaches have clung on to their secluded charm.

1. Destination Highlights

National Park

Aside from beaches, Phu Quoc also offers one of Asia’s most sensational national parks, located inside an enormous man-made biosphere.

The park, built to protect the island’s rich natural biodiversity, is one of the few places in Vietnam where you can catch a glimpse of the rare dugong, as well as hawksbill and green turtles.

Aside from animals, the park boasts a huge selection of flora and fauna, set amongst its various waterfalls, coral reefs and wetlands.

The Sand Dunes

Formed after thousands of years, these geological wonders are a must-see for any visitor to Mui Ne.

Although it is possible, and chap to get there by yourself, it is also possible to take a tour from the center of Mui Ne to both locales; the white sand dunes and the red.

Many activities are available here, including dune buggies and sledging – but, be warned: you should pay no more than 20,000VND for a go on the thin plastic sheets!

The Prince’s Castle

Situated atop Ong Hoang Hill, visitors to Prince’s castle (named after French Duke De Montpensier who built his imperial estate here in the early 20th century) are treated well.

Panoramic views of the surrounding countryside are offered, as well as the decaying remnants of the ‘prince’s’ originally 536 square meter estate.

Due to lack of restoration efforts, all that remains is the original watchtower, as well as its stone foundations and a few military bunkers.

Regardless, the spectacular views, as well as historical insight are worth the trip.

2. Transportation

Thanks to its small size, Mui Ne is very easy to navigate. There is one long road that connects everything else - Nguyen Dinh Chieu street.

The easiest way to get around is by motor-taxi, plentiful and cheap.

If you have the courage, rent a motorbike discover the town yourself. The cost is between 120,000-150,000 for daily rental.

4. Dining

The central classic mi quang (turmeric noodles), com ga (chicken rice), and pho can be found around Mui Ne.

Phan Thiet Central Market is the largest of its kind in the Mui Ne area, hosting myriad vendors and stalls across a large multi-story complex.

Find local produce and delicacies daily, but popping in around dawn will mean that you get the freshest goods as huge crowds gather at this time, haggling with vendors for an array of fresh fruits, spices, nuts, meat and dried foodstuffs.

In neighboring Phan Thiet, start at Tran Hung Dao street for a smattering of souvenir and jewelry shops.

Phan Thiet Central Market, the largest in the province, is the go-to destination for local items such as fresh fruit, fruit candies, dried seafood, and sand paintings.

Mui Ne Handicraft is a great place to buy unique and unusual gifts, and to help the local community at the same time.

Since 2008 this market has been open to raise money for disadvantaged locals; the humble-looking workshop section offers visitors the chance to observe and engage with children with disabilities.
