There are a number of elephant sanctuaries within reach of Luang Prabang, but the MandaLao Elephant Sanctuary, opened in September 2016, is one of our favourites.
There is no riding allowed here, and the sanctuary instead places the emphasis on protecting and educating about these gentle giants.
After an early breakfast you will be met by a specialist guide and transferred to a beautiful elephant oasis just 40 minutes outside of Luang Prabang.

Jump on a boat to cross the river, where you will be met by two adults and, if you are lucky, a baby elephant as well!
Your guide and the mahouts will help you feed the elephants and then you will spend some time walking with the elephants through rice paddies and meandering creeks.

After saying goodbye to your pachyderm friends, you’ll head back to camp where a tasty lunch of local specialties awaits you.
